So all the traffic going from 24 to 75, which, lets face it, is a lot of traffic and a ton of trucks, we're sending north through the narrow cut between Lookout Mountain and the river, up over Missionary Ridge, which trucks always clog up, just to have a lot of them hit 75 and head back south.
In the rain, traffic backs up for miles, if there is an accident, traffic backs up for miles, if it is just a Wednesday at 5 traffic backs up for miles. If there is construction, traffic backs up for miles. This, quite frankly, is nuts.
There needs to be a bypass as shown in blue above. It needs to go around, or under, Lookout mountain (tunnels are expensive, but so is land acquisition, so a tunnel may be the better option). There is no way this gets built without federal funds, or without it being a toll road. I personally would be okay with it being a toll road.
An issue is it would happen in Georgia but be most beneficial to Chattanooga, so the funding and everything else would be a headache, but it needs to happen, more than any other road project in the area, this needs to happen. It needs to happen so bad, anyone who doesn't think so go drive that stretch any day of the week.
It would, however, cost probably around a billion dollars, which is why it needs federal funds or to be a toll road. No state is going to build that
I am not sure why there isn't thousands of people commenting. Chattanooga absolutely needs a bypass. I frequently commute between Cartersville and Nashville and Chattanooga adds 30 min to an hour to the drive every time. They need a bypass! Waze continuously sends me through back roads and city streets to avoid the area. Ridiculous.

ReplyDeleteABSOLUTLEY AGREE!! I travel from Murfreesboro area to Atlanta frequently and getting through or around Chattanooga is EXTREMELLY frustrating. Needs a Bypass around Chattanooga.
